The main function of the mask is to block moisture droplets that form when coughing and sneezing, and in which microorganisms (viruses, bacteria, etc.) can be suspended. Correct use of masks can limit the spread of microorganisms to some extent.
Keep in mind, the use of masks is effective only when combining with other prevention methods (minimization of contacts, hand hygiene, disinfection of objects).
Who should wear a mask?
- A sick person who has symptoms of a respiratory illness (cough, sneezing, runny nose, etc.)
- Medical staff to provide medical care to a patient.
- An employee (person) when caring for a sick person with respiratory diseases.
- Healthy people in places where there is a possibility of contact with a sick person who has respiratory symptoms.
World Health Organization (WHO) recommends changing the mask every 2-3 hours. However, the reusable mask can only be reused after processing. The WHO guidelines state that the fabric mask must be washed at least once a day.
If you do not have the opportunity to disinfect the mask before wearing it again (for example, when going to several shops), put it in a clean bag between use and remove it without touching the mask itself. During storage, the mask should be carefully folded upside down to minimize contact with the surrounding surface. Before and after putting on the silk mask, hands should be disinfected.
How to wash silk face masks?
As mentioned earlier, according to the recommendations of WHO, reusable silk face masks must be washed after each wear. To do this, you can use both a regular washing machine and a hand wash. Let’s consider these methods of washing a reusable mask in more detail.
How to wash a silk mask in a washing machine?
When handling used silk masks, it is recommended to wear disposable gloves and keep the masks away from your face. A mesh laundry bag is a great way to preserve masks if you machine washes them with your other clothing. Sort the masks by color. Use regular detergent and the hottest setting suitable for the fabric of the mask. Do not wash colored masks with white masks or clothing unless you are sure the fabric will not fade.
How to dry a silk mask?
The mask can be dried in a tumble dryer or outdoors. In the first case, use the hottest mode for quick-drying, and in the second, it is preferable to put the mask on a horizontal surface or hang it on a dryer in direct sunlight.
Once dry, store the silk masks in a closed container or bag until you need them.
Methods that should not be used to disinfect masks
There are dozens of ways to disinfect masks on the Internet that are not scientifically substantiated. Examples of such methods include boiling in a saucepan, reheating in the microwave, and wiping with disinfectant wipes. Remember that such an action is not recommended by WHO and can be potentially hazardous to your health and safety.
